Quick answer: aftercare priorities

  • Keep the injection points clean and avoid unnecessary touching
  • Do not massage, press or shape the filler unless your doctor specifically tells you to
  • Avoid heavy exercise, heat, sauna and alcohol flushing during the early settling period
  • Expect mild swelling or bruising, but monitor whether it improves
  • Contact the clinic urgently for unusual pain, skin whitening or mottling, vision changes or stroke-like symptoms
  • Keep the clinic's emergency contact information available before you leave

The first 24 hours

For the first day, keep things boring: gentle cleansing, clean hands, no rubbing and no aggressive skincare over injection points. If the clinic recommends a cold compress, use it gently and only as instructed. Avoid pressing hard because pressure can irritate tissue and may disturb the result in some areas.

It is also sensible to avoid heat and flushing triggers early on: sauna, steam rooms, very hot showers, hard workouts and heavy alcohol. These can make swelling and bruising worse. If your doctor gave area-specific instructions, follow those over any general guide.

Days 2-7

Swelling and small bruises can become more visible over the next day or two before settling. Lips and under-eyes can look especially swollen at first. Do not judge the final shape too early, and do not try to mould the filler yourself unless the injecting doctor gave you a clear reason and technique.

Ask the clinic when it is safe to restart facial massage, facial treatments, dental work, laser, RF, strong acids, retinoids or acne actives. The answer depends on the injection area, depth, product and your skin condition.

What is usually normal after filler

  • Mild swelling, tenderness or tightness around the injection area
  • Small bruises or needle marks
  • Temporary unevenness while swelling is still moving
  • A firmer feeling in the area during early settling

Normal symptoms should trend calmer, not more intense. If something feels stronger than the clinic described, contact them rather than waiting silently.

Warning signs that need urgent help

Contact the clinic immediately, or seek urgent medical care, if you notice:

  • Severe or increasing pain, especially if it feels out of proportion
  • White, gray, blue or mottled skin near the injection area
  • Skin that looks dusky, darkening, blistered or broken down
  • Vision changes, eye pain, sudden headache or dizziness
  • Face drooping, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or trouble walking
  • Fever, pus, spreading redness or heat that suggests infection

For HA filler, early treatment with hyaluronidase can be time-sensitive when vascular occlusion is suspected. Do not self-treat urgent symptoms with massage or skincare.

What to avoid until the area settles

  • Pressing, squeezing, massaging or sleeping directly on the treated area if your doctor has not advised it
  • Facials, facial massage, dental procedures or other treatments near the area until cleared
  • Hard workouts, sauna, steam, hot yoga and heavy alcohol during the early period
  • Makeup over fresh needle points if the clinic asked you to keep them clean
  • Booking a correction too early before swelling has settled, unless there is a medical concern

The bottom line

Good filler aftercare is mostly restraint: keep the area clean, avoid heat and pressure, and give swelling time. But do not be passive about red flags. Unusual pain, skin-colour change or vision symptoms are not "normal swelling" and should be treated urgently.
